work in progress: Hamilton house

Street view

Set on an unusually wide 39-foot lot in Roscoe Village, this project is a new ground-up home within the City of Chicago. After inheriting a childhood house, the clients set out to build a true forever home rooted in longevity.

Originally envisioning a traditional gabled form, the design evolved into a restrained, flat-roofed masonry residence that draws from Chicago’s culture of brick building without imitating it. A light-toned modern brick façade and carefully proportioned openings give the house a quiet confidence, while a complementary perforated brick weave wall provides privacy and softens the street edge.

Inside the 4,700 SF home, the first floor sits nearly at grade, creating a direct connection to the backyard. A generous kitchen and dining space opens fully to the rear deck through a large glazed wall, designed for hosting family gatherings. The garage and main house frame the yard as an outdoor room, reinforcing a sense of enclosure and continuity. Multiple skylights and strategic ceiling openings throughout the home, as well as a primary suite overlooking a green roof, prioritize connection to the outdoors and natural light.

Scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2026, the project reflects 34-TEN’s belief that enduring architecture comes from pushing beyond initial assumptions to create something lasting and thoughtful.
