work in progress: logan square single family house

The selective renovation of this 126-year-old Logan Square home was guided by preservation, efficiency, and environmental responsibility. The clients were deeply committed to maintaining the character of the original 5,000 SF house while reducing construction waste wherever possible. Original ceiling molding, masonry, and key architectural details were carefully preserved, with new brick and window openings thoughtfully integrated where necessary.

The most transformative move was the kitchen. By eliminating a first-floor bedroom, the plan was reworked to create a larger, more functional gathering space that opens directly to the rear yard. Removing the enclosed porch and adding a mudroom strengthened the indoor-outdoor connection and improved daily family life. Upstairs, four bedrooms and an office provide long-term flexibility, including space for visiting family.

Throughout the project, the design team worked closely with the clients to honor the spirit of the original house while introducing carefully considered updates. The new work is intentionally restrained, creating a clear but harmonious contrast with the existing structure. The result is a home that maintains its character while naturally accommodating contemporary living.
